How to Get a Motorcycle Driver’s License in Utah

Utah Motorcycle Driver’s License

Utah Motorcycle Driver's LicenseDying to experience the thrill of riding down open roads on top of a motorcycle?  In Utah, but before you can fully enjoy your passion, you still need to be properly and legally licensed to drive a motorcycle.

You must get a motorcycle driver’s license from the Utah Department of Public safety, Driver License Division (DLD). If you have a Class D driver’s license for regular passengers’ vehicle, then you only need a motorcycle endorsement added to your existing license.

There are two ways to get a motorcycle driver’s license or endorsement.  One way is to head to the nearest licensing office, fill out an application form and complete an eye exam as well as a 25 question written test. Once you have successfully completed the exam, you will receive a motorcycle learner’s permit that will allow you to operate any size of motorcycle. However, the permit will not allow you the following things for the first two months:

  • Ride with a passenger.
  • Ride between the hours of 10P.M and 6A.M.
  • Ride on highways posted more than 60 miles an hour.

The restrictions will be lifted on the third through six months. When you are ready to take the riding skills test you may call the office where you get your permit and set an appointment to take the riding skills test. For the test, you are allowed to bring your motorcycle to the exam station together with your permit. Once you successfully complete the riding skills test you will receive your permanent license in the mail.

Basic Requirements for the License

If you are 16 years old or over and do not have a driver’s license, then you may get a motorcycle-only license. If you are under 18 years old, a parent or guardian will need to sign your application. All applicants are required to pass the written test.  The Driver License Division of Utah may waive the road skills portion of the test if you completed an approved rider training course.

The following are the steps to get your motorcycle license:

  • Enroll and complete a motorcycle rider training course.
  • If you are under 18 years of age, have your parent or guardian sign your application.
  • To get an endorsement, bring your current driver’s license. For a motorcycle-only license, provide important documentation such as proof of name, birthday, resident address, legal presence, and social security number. See DLD’s approved list.
