Motorcycle License Requirements in Connecticut

Connecticut Motorcycle Driver's License

Under the Connecticut DMV guidelines, anyone who drives a motorcycle must first have a motorcycle driver’s license or a Class M motorcycle permit and instruction permit. However, in order to obtain a motorcycle endorsement you must possess a valid Connecticut driver’s license.

Basic Requirements for the License

The motorcycle permit is valid for 60 days and will allow you to practice riding a motorcycle before applying for a motorcycle endorsement. To get a permit, visit any DMV office and provide the following:

  • Valid Connecticut driver’s license.
  • A notarized Certificate of Parental Consent or (Form 2-D) for applicants who are under 18 years old.
  • Complete application for Non-commercial Driver’s License or (Form R-229).
  • Show proof of attending and completing an 8 hours course on Safe Driver’s Practices.
  • Pay your fees.

To Obtain a Motorcycle License

For Applicants Over 18:

  • Present important documents as acceptable forms of identification.
  • Complete an application for non-commercial driver’s license or the Form R-229.
  • Show proof of attending and completing an 8 hours course on Safe Driver’s Practices.
  • Pay your fees.
  • Pass the written knowledge test, road test and vision screening test.
  • Remember that on-the-road test is not administered on the same day as the knowledge test. See walk-in testing hours.

For Applicants With a Permit:

  • Have a valid Connecticut motorcycle driver’s license.
  • Have a valid Connecticut driver’s license.
  • Certificates that verify your completion of DMV-approved motorcycle safety training course.

Restrictions After Endorsement

After you earn a motorcycle endorsement, you have to follow the following restrictions:

  • Drivers who are 18 years old and above are not allowed transporting passengers for the first 90 days since they obtain a motorcycle endorsement.
  • Drivers who are 16 and 17 years old are not allowed to transport any passenger on a motorcycle for six months after getting the endorsement.

Replacing a Lost/Stolen License

Once you receive a motorcycle endorsement on your driver’s license, they are both considered as one and the same. Once your motorcycle driver’s license was lost, stolen or damaged, you need to follow the regular procedures of DMV of Connecticut for replacing a driver’s license.
